Esplora Interactive Science Centre has been transformed into a hub for all things extraterrestrial this week, featuring satellites, astronauts, lunar rovers, space shuttles and much more.

Journey to Space, which opened on Tuesday, April 11, and runs until Sunday, April 16, aims to continue promoting STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), as Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti said during a press conference.

He added that the event also serves to bridge the gap between science and society, whereby visitors are able to engage in interactive exhibits as well as meet and interact with a number of local space science researchers.

“We are continuing to invest in STEM education with the aim of continuing to raise awareness while encouraging more children from a young age to choose these subjects. The government is committed to further invest in research, particularly in spatial activities to regularise the sector,” Azzopardi Tanti said.

He continued that work is currently under way for the drafting of a new law on space activities.

Chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology, Tonio Portughese, said: “We are offering this exciting opportunity to our visitors, to spend their Easter holidays with a difference by visiting outer space here at Esplora. Our aim is to create a lasting positive memory for families who visit the science centre while exposing them to the world of space sciences and encouraging their interests in this field of STEM.”

Esplora’s senior director Olaf Mckay said that, through this event, the Esplora team is continuing to increase awareness of opportunities for space research in Malta and provide inspiration for future generations of scientists. He said that at Esplora is committed to continue showcasing science as engaging, in order to achieve the ultimate goal of creating a culture of scientific curiosity and creativity.
