Submissions for Malta’s first Art Biennale open

Artists from all backgrounds and locations are invited to participate in the call for submissions to exhibit their artwork at Malta’s first Art Biennale, taking place from March to May 2024.

Themed ‘baħar abjad imsaġar taż-żebbuġ – white sea olive groves’, the biennale, under the artistic direction of Sofia Baldi Pighi, aims to explore challenging narratives and stimulate artistic commentary from the southern reaches of the European continent. Selected artists will have the exceptional opportunity to showcase their work in a unique Mediterranean setting, contributing to an exciting new event for the region’s art community.

The deadline for applications is August 25 at noon. Successful artists may be eligible for a financial grant of up to Є13,000 to support the realisation of their artwork, as well as coverage of travel and accommodation expenses for those traveling to the islands.

Artists can apply through the  official website. Detailed information about the main exhibition space, including facilities, can also be found there. For guidelines and regulations regarding grant eligibility, interested artists can access the relevant information here. The Budget Breakdown Form for grant eligibility is also available for download here.

The curatorial team will carefully review all applications, and the selected artists will be announced through maltabiennale.art’s online channels. This call for artists complements the Biennale’s call for national pavilions, which will be featured at key landmarks in Malta and Gozo. The Malta Biennale is presented by Heritage Malta’s Muża in collaboration with Arts Council Malta, and with the cooperation of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, VisitMalta, and Spazju Kreattiv.
