On July 2, a group of 11 Maltese students and two teachers will travel to China on a cultural programme.
The students are from St Margaret’s College Secondary School Verdala, Cospicua, who regularly participate in the ‘Science China Corner’ projects and two other students from a Church school (affiliated with the Science China Corner) who annually participate in the Chinese competition launched by the Youth Link Guangdong Association of Guangdong Province, China.
During the 10-day programme, the students will visit the capital city of Beijing and the province of Shandong and Sichuan. They will have the opportunity to meet members of the diplomatic corps in China and are also invited to participate in the China International Youth Cultural Exchange Camp Activities 2023 where they will present their talents together with other students from Saudi Arabia.
The students will be under the supervision of science teacher and founder of the Science China Corner, Martin Azzopardi. History teacher Joanne Dalli will also accompany them.
Last summer, Azzopardi received a reply letter from Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping, commending the valuable work he is doing on the ‘Science China Corner’. In this letter, the president extended an open invitation to Azzopardi and his students to visit China on a cultural programme and further strengthen the friendship between the two countries.
This letter of appreciation was officially presented to Azzopardi last October by the Chinese Ambassador to Malta, Yu Dunhai, in the presence of the Minister of Education, Sport, Youth Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, the director of the Centre of Chinese Culture in Valletta, Yuan Yuan, and the president of the Malta Sino Friendship Society, Reno Calleja.
Azzopardi said: “This is a unique opportunity for Maltese students for which they are very grateful to the Chinese Embassy in Malta and to the China Cultural Centre who thought of all the preparations needed for this intensive cultural programme. Now the Maltese students can directly appreciate the vast Chinese culture, while representing Malta in China and serve as a bridge of friendship between the two countries.”
