There’s a Harry Potter TV series in the works

Harry Potter has been one of the biggest phenomena of this millennium so far, spawning best-selling books, several blockbusters, countless sold-out items of merchandise, and even its own theme park. Needless to say, the announcement of a new TV series based on the iconic book series was sure to make headlines.

Announced by Warner Bros. Discovery, the first season of the series is expected to hit Max – formally HBO Max – in 2025 or 2026. The storyline is set to follow that of the books incredibly closely, something the movie series couldn’t do for numerous reasons.

So far, no actors have been cast in any roles, and the return of some cast members of the movies has not been entirely ruled out. Even so, Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the movie series, told comicbook.com that the producers would probably want to “make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere.”

One person who will be returning, however, is J.K. Rowling, the author of the record-breaking series, with her company, Brontë Film and TV, producing the TV show alongside Warner Bros. Television. Although this came as a surprise to many fans given Rowling’s comments on trans rights, she still holds creative control over her works.

At the time of writing, it’s still unclear when filming will start, but with production underway, we will certainly be hearing more about this project in the next few months and years. Plus, given Max’s insane budgets for its shows – it spent $200 million producing the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon – the Harry Potter TV show could be a truly magical production full of special effects.

We’ll bring you more updates as we get them but, in the meantime, let’s clink our butterbeer glasses in celebration of this exciting news!
