Alexia Sant and Kate Oswald, two students who attend San Anton School, have been awarded this year’s Achieve Sustainability Award in partnership with Prince’s Trust International for their initiative aimed at aiding the transition of migrant families to life in Malta.

The award recognises graduates of the Prince’s Trust International Achieve programme, who have made significant contributions to enhancing sustainability in their community.

Prince’s Trust International works to support young people in over 18 countries through employability, education and enterprise. Founded in 2015 by King Charles III, then Prince of Wales, the organisation has so far supported over 75,000 young people.

Through their project ‘Helping Migrant Youths’, Alexia and Kate showed great commitment to sustainability and community service. Their project involved the collection and donation of reusable items such as stationery, books, games and clothes to a non-governmental organisation assisting migrant families.

The project also focused on recycling and reusing as many items as possible in a bid to reduce waste. Students and teachers were urged to bring any items that might be useful to school for them to be sorted and eventually donated.

The project proved so successful that it is set to become a yearly school-wide initiative.

“We chose this project because it was the perfect way to combine two modules which we enjoyed and which helped us understand how important they are for everyone to be aware of,” Alexia said.

Kate added: “Collecting all these items, and seeing how many people are so willing to give, makes me proud to say I am one of the people who started this initiative!”

The award is supported by HSBC Malta.

Geoffrey Fichte, CEO at HSBC Malta, said: “We are incredibly proud of both Alexia and Kate for their remarkable achievement. Their initiative is a perfect example of the spirit we strive to foster through our partnership with Prince’s Trust International. Their project not only seeks to help people in the community, but it does so in a manner that is sustainable, a philosophy we at HSBC are strong believers in.”
