Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) has taken its campaign against the damaging commercialisation of the Marsamxett Coast facing Valletta to UNESCO.

In 2009, UNESCO asked the Maltese Government to establish a buffer zone to safeguard the views of Valletta’s UNESCO World Heritage skyline for all to enjoy. The boundary was declared to be the Marsamxett Area of High Landscape Value (AHLV).

Despite this boundary, new planning application proposals that encroach on the area are currently being processed by the Planning Authority. FAA has taken its case to UNESCO, requesting that the Maltese Authorities urgently intervene to ensure that no commercial development obliterates the visual enjoyment and legibility of the urban skyline and fortifications of the Valletta’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Any visual disturbances within the buffer zone or along the perimeter are to be strictly prohibited.
