The 58th National Competition and Exhibition of Photography 2023, organised by the Malta Photographic Society (MPS), will take place at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta between December 1 and 21. Set to make history, this 58th edition boasts an unprecedented number of participants and entrants, showcasing remarkable photographic excellence.

A staggering 900+ submissions were received by the Malta Photographic Society, resulting in the selection of 107 prints and 150 digital projected images. The diversity of entries in the four categories – including 188 Monochrome Prints, 214 Colour Prints category, 232 Monochrome Projected Images, and 277 Colour Projected Images –  underscores the vibrant creativity and passion within our local photographic community.

The executive committee of the Malta Photographic Society expresses its delight at the overwhelming interest from both members and non-members of the MPS, all eager to present their finest works for this important competition. The opportunity to exhibit in the esteemed Palazzo de La Salle has fuelled enthusiasm, marking a significant moment for the MPS and its contributors.

Acknowledging the significance of offering exhibition spaces to photographers, the Malta Photographic Society remains steadfast in its dedication to raising the status of photography to equal that of other artistic expressions. This dedication has resulted in increased engagement within the local photographers’ community, evident in the growing number of participants in this year’s competition.

The results of the competition, which were announced in October, highlighted the exceptional quality of the submissions, and praised the meticulous organisation of the event. The photographs submitted span a wide spectrum: from emotional and artistic to classic, showcasing the diverse talents within the Malta Photographic Society.

Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals were awarded in each of the four categories, with Honourable Mentions recognising quality submissions that didn’t secure a top-three position. Special awards were also presented for Best Portrait, Best Landscape, Best Still Life, Best Nature, Best Architecture, and Best Street Photography works.
