The beloved children’s festival is back for its seventh edition, offering about 100 students the opportunity to collaborate with established theatre directors.

The festival, designed by young people for young people, provides the students with the chance to not only nurture their creativity and talent but also to produce a theatrical production under the guidance of top tutors and directors in the industry.

The outcome is six 15- to 20-minute performances that were presented to schools today and to the public this weekend at Blue Box in Msida. These include adaptations of the Greek classic Ceyx and Alcyone, of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

There will be shows on Saturday at 6.30pm and on Sunday at 10am. All performances will have surtitles in both English and Maltese, with translations by Simone Spiteri. Tickets are available from showshappening.com.

The participating schools this year are Immaculate Conception in Tarxien, St Clare’s College in Pembroke, QSI International School in Attard, St Nicholas and Stella Maris College in Rabat, and St Albert the Great College in Valletta. They collaborated with Zoe Camilleri, Ben Abela, Joseph Zammit, Philip Leone Ganado, Nicole Cuschieri and Rochelle Gatt.

The festival, organised by Teatru Malta and supported by the ministry for education, will also feature original music by Trikki Trakki music designer and producer Chris Vella.
