Following the successful accreditation of the degree in Mechanical Engineering by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) in March 2023, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta initiated the procedure to also accredit its degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK.
Later in 2023, in fact, IET sent an accreditation committee to Malta with the aim of evaluating the EEE degree. The outcome of this committee was a positive one, with the full-time and part-time degree programmes having been accredited with partial CEng status.
The panel commended the programme for its high calibre and tailoring to the local job market whilst ensuring strong job mobility across the different engineering sectors in Malta, as well as the opportunity for internship with industry and other extra-curricular activities, that ensure a well-rounded educational experience to students. Another commendation was about the resources being made available to students as well as the substantial recent investment in infrastructure though the newly inaugurated facilities.
This decision was later endorsed by the Engineering Council (UK) and in 2024, the IET wrote back certifying that Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree programme has been officially accredited, backdated to the 2021 intake.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ing. Andrew Sammut, remarked that this important step shows that the programmes offered by the Faculty are of the highest standard and are equivalent to degrees offered by UK institutions and other European universities.
This is also evidenced by performance of UM engineering graduates when continuing studies overseas. Prof. Ing. Cyril Spiteri Staines, who coordinated the accreditation process, highlighted the fact that the accreditation will facilitate the process for UM graduates to obtain the prestigious title of Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the UK Engineering Council. The CEng UK title is also recognised in Europe and most Commonwealth countries.
University of Malta Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella thanked the Faculty members for pursuing this process which further reinforces the University’s commitment to quality assurance in the programmes it offers.
