5 Maltese making waves internationally

A tiny rock with some very mighty people! Malta may have its faults, but it’s also nurtured some incredibly talented people who are flying the flag high. Here are five local celebs that I love to keep an eye on and who regularly crop up on the international news.

1. Charles & Ron – Fashion Designers

The design duo Charles & Ron have gained international fame with their creations being worn by stars such as Ariana Grande, Paula Abdul, and Ashanti. Their designs, which often feature Maltese cultural elements, have been showcased globally, solidifying their status in the fashion industry​​.

2. Emily Jones – Body Positivity Influencer

Emily Jones is a Maltese Instagram influencer known for her advocacy of body positivity. She shares her journey of self-acceptance and promotes a positive body image through her social media platforms. Emily’s inspirational posts encourage others to embrace their bodies and celebrate their uniqueness, regardless of societal standards. Her influence has grown rapidly, attracting a supportive and diverse community. Emily’s family runs the plus-size inclusive clothing store Cecile in Valletta, continuing a tradition of celebrating diverse body types​

3. Ylenia Carabott – Footballer

Ylenia Carabott is a prominent figure in women’s football, playing for Belgium’s Royal Charleroi Sporting Club. Known for her scoring prowess, she has made significant strides in international football, previously playing for clubs in Italy and Greece.

4. Rachel Cuschieri – Footballer

Rachel Cuschieri is another standout in Maltese football, currently signed with Serie B side S.S. Lazio Women in Italy. She has a distinguished career with numerous caps for the Maltese national team and has played in the Netherlands and Belgium​.

5. Stevie Camilleri – Water Polo Player

Stevie Camilleri is a professional water polo player who has been representing Malta internationally for over a decade. He was the top scorer at the European Championships in Belgrade in 2016 and is now launching the S7even Water Polo Academy to train young athletes in the sport. His contributions have significantly raised Malta’s profile in water polo​​.
