5 ways to travel sustainably and make a positive impact

Don’t you hate the twinges of guilt everytime you book a quick city break and pile up on that carbon footprint? And yet, the idea of quitting travel is unthinkable, especially being trapped on a small rock like this one. What to do? Turns out there’s plenty we can do – and without a lot of effort, which to be honest would defeat the entire point of taking a break.

And no, I’m not suggesting that you give up on your hotel daily cleaning, which is a ridiculous idea anyway. My take on that is that hotels can choose other ways to make a difference than by cutting costs on cleaning and pretending that they’re going green.

Opt for sustainable transportation
Reduce your carbon footprint by travelling via public transport, walking, or cycling whenever possible. For longer distances, consider trains or buses over flights. If you must fly, look for airlines that offer carbon offset programmes to compensate for your emissions.

Choose eco-friendly accommodation
Opt for hotels and resorts that prioritise sustainability. Look for certifications like LEED or Green Key, which indicate a commitment to energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. Even small guesthouses that practice eco-friendly measures, such as using renewable energy or offering recycling, can have a significant impact.

Support local businesses
Rather than sticking to big-name brands or international chains, spend your money on local restaurants, markets, and artisans. This not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with importing goods but also helps support the local economy and community.

Reduce plastic waste
Travelling often involves disposable plastic products, from water bottles to packaging. You can combat this by bringing a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, and cutlery. Many travel destinations now offer water refill stations, so you don’t have to rely on buying bottled water.

Respect wildlife and natural habitats
When visiting natural reserves or wildlife areas, ensure you follow the guidelines to avoid disturbing the environment. Avoid activities that exploit animals or damage ecosystems, and choose wildlife tours that are certified as ethical and environmentally conscious.
