Sci-fi and cyberpunk fans are in for a treat as Amazon has just announced that a new RoboCop TV series is in the works.
Written, directed, and co-produced by Peter Ocko, who worked on the Pushing Daisies, The Office (US), and Dinosaurs TV series, the RoboCop series will see a giant tech corporation collaborate with a US police department to create and introduce “ technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime—a police officer who’s part man, part machine.”
Joining Ocko as co-producer is Australian filmmaker James Wan, who is the co-creator of The Conjuring universe, as well as the Saw and the Insidious franchises. As such, it is yet uncertain what path the RoboCop series will take, though it seems likely that the marriage of satire with philosophical notions the original RoboCop movie is famous for may make a return.
Released in 1987, the first RoboCop action film featured Peter Weller in the lead role, and followed the half-robot, half-man police officer who fights crime while coming to terms with whatever humanity is left in him. The film was a box office success, earning $53.4 million, and its philosophical messages earned praise from reviewers.
Its success meant that the film received two sequels—one in 1990 and one in 1993—an animated children’s series, and a remake in 2014.
Not much else is known about the TV revival happening at Amazon, but we’ll keep our eye out for more info!
