Chocolate brown is the lipstick colour of the season

The verdict is out and chocolate brown lipstick is officially being called the colour of the season by many beauty magazines and influencers around the world. Originally a staple in the 1990s, its comeback proves that our nostalgia for the decade that gave us the World Wide Web is not slowing down.

Back in the 1990s, chocolate brown was a lipstick colour favoured by supermodels, including Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelistas, and Naomi Campbell. It was a colour that tinted their lips in a warm and alluring way. Now, some 30 years later, It-girls like Emily Ratajowski, Dakota Johnson, and Hailey Bieber have all been seen wearing the colour, marking a clear comeback for the once ubiquitous lip shade.

Yet, as these trends often happen, this time round is all about choosing the right colour to suit and enhance your complexion, with chocolate brown lipstick now also coming in cafe latte and beige, among other hues. So, not chocolate brown, but a different shade of brown.

According to Vogue, it’s very important to choose the right shade for your skin tone. Those with olive skin, which many Maltese people possess, should opt for a “cool, dark brown lipstick.” Those with a golden brown complexion, however, should go for a “brown, slightly burnt terracotta lipstick.” It also recommends starting off with a brown lip pencil to help define the lines.

Of course, there are many brands that now have chocolate-coloured lipstick, including Rhianna’s Fenty Beauty, Revlon, Charlotte Tilbury, MAC Cosmetics, and Victoria Beckham Beauty, so you should have no issue finding a shade that fits your skin tone!
