Let’s start this by pointing out the obvious: this article has some spoilers about the upcoming film… But it’s nothing you won’t deduce from the trailer!

Universal Pictures have just released the trailer for the fourth (and supposedly final) instalment in the Bridget Jones franchise and we’re a mess!

From the start of the trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, it’s clear that Marc Darcy has passed on. As Bridget herself (played by Reneé Zellweger) narrates, she is now a ‘widow’. Of course, following the events of the third film, she is also a mother.

But that’s not all. In Mad About the Boy, Bridget is also dating a much younger guy. And, in true Bridget Jones fashion, it’s a clumsy, klutzy affair that, at least from the trailer, looks absolutely hilarious.

Of course, all these new developments have left fans reeling, with many commenting that they’ve already had a good sob following Marc Darcy’s death announcement.

Even so, there is some good news for Team Darcy. Actor Colin Firth will be reprising the role for some flashbacks. Joining him will also be Hugh Grant once again taking on the role of Daniel Cleaver; and Sally Philips, Shirley Henderson, and James Callis will be coming back as Bridget’s best friends, Shazzer, Jude, and Tom.

Meanwhile, there will also be plenty of new characters. Jones’s new love interest, 29-year-old Roxster, is being played by White Lotus-star Leo Woodall. And Emma Thompson and Chiwetel Ejiofor have joined the cast as gynaecologist Dr Rawlings and science teacher Mr Wallaker, respectively.
