We got cheated out of December 8, but December 13 is really making up for it by gifting us a long weekend. Question is: how to spend it? Whether you’re in the mood for festive fun, cozy comforts, or outdoor adventures, here are three easy and fun ways to enjoy a winter weekend in Malta.

Hike, picnic or just chill on the beach: Winter is the best time to enjoy Malta’s coastline without the crowds, but only if the weather is nice. Take a walk along Dingli Cliffs and soak up those jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean. If it’s windy, skip the riskier spots and opt for a sheltered beach like Golden Bay or Ramla Bay for a peaceful stroll. Just make sure you steer clear of any waves, as they can be treacherous. And if you’re up for a little adventure, hop over to Gozo and explore the stunning Dwejra area.

Immerse yourself in festive markets: If you’re feeling the Christmas vibe, why not check out some of Malta’s amazing holiday markets? The Malta Artisan Christmas Market at Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar is happening on December 15, and it’s packed with unique handmade gifts and delicious festive treats. You’ll love the historic setting too – it’s like stepping into a Christmas postcard. Another great option is Natalis Notabilis in Rabat, running until December 15. It’s a total festive wonderland with food stalls, crafts, and Maltese holiday classics that’ll get you in the holiday mood instantly. Fairyland Malta is also open right outside Valletta, perfect if you need to keep the little ones entertained.

Qastan tal-Imbuljuta & a movie marathon: Picture this: you’re snuggled up on the sofa with a warm mug of in hand, the lights twinkling on your Christmas tree, and your favourite movies playing. Sounds perfect, right? To make this comforting Maltese chestnut and cocoa drink, just simmer dried chestnuts with cocoa powder, cloves, cinnamon, sugar, and a little citrus peel in water. Let it all bubble away until the chestnuts are soft and the flavours come together. Serve it hot and enjoy every sip. While you’re sipping, queue up some fun Christmas movies. Have you seen Spirited? It’s a fresh and hilarious take on A Christmas Carol. Or try The Noel Diary if you’re in the mood for something heartfelt. For laughs, Love Hard is a great choice. Of course, you can always go back to classics like Home Alone or The Holiday to bring that nostalgic magic. Oh yeah, and nothing can convince us that Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie.
