Hoi Polloi Academy announced it is staging Shrek the Musical JR at St Agatha’s Auditorium, Rabat, in March.
The family-friendly musical comedy is a celebration of courage, kindness and finding one’s own place in the world. It follows Shrek, a misunderstood ogre who embarks on a journey to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon to reclaim his beloved swamp. Along the way, he learns that true strength comes from opening his heart to friendship and love.
“Shrek JR is more than a fairytale − it’s a story of self-acceptance and resilience,” Marco A. Calleja, principal of Hoi Polloi Academy, said.
“Announcing this show on National Shrek Day [January 4] highlights the transformative power of the performing arts, which empower our students to grow in confidence, creativity and collaboration.”
The plot
In Shrek The Musical JR, Shrek’s quiet swamp is overrun by quirky fairytale misfits − Pinocchio, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan and the Three Little Pigs − exiled by the villainous Lord Farquaad.
To reclaim his land, Shrek strikes a deal: rescue Princess Fiona from her tower and earn back his swamp. But this journey of humour, heart and adventure reveals the power of friendship, love and embracing what makes us unique.

With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek the Musical JR. is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film and William Steig’s beloved book. This adaptation, created by iTheatrics, offers young performers an unforgettable storytelling experience.
