MEIA outlines priorities for Malta’s creative sector in 2025

The association aims to implement reforms to promote transparency, equity, and accountability across the sector

The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) has announced its agenda for 2025, focusing on addressing challenges in Malta’s creative industries. The association aims to implement reforms to promote transparency, equity, and accountability across the sector.

Ongoing challenges in the sector

While 2024 saw developments such as the opening of the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) and increased domestic screen funding, systemic issues persist. Fragile infrastructure, bureaucratic delays, and inconsistent leadership remain obstacles. Rising production costs and increased demand for public funding have further underscored the need for a more equitable allocation of resources.

“Our priority is to ensure that the systems governing the sector are transparent, inclusive, and genuinely supportive,” said Maria Galea, President of MEIA.

Advocacy goals for 2025

MEIA’s priorities for 2025 include improving governance and financial transparency in the Malta Film Commission, promoting merit-based leadership free from political interference, and advocating for fair and efficient payment systems. The association also aims to address the shortage of affordable creative spaces, push for a comprehensive National Screen Policy, and lobby for clearer, more equitable public funding guidelines, particularly from the Malta Tourism Authority.

Collaboration and initiatives

To support these priorities, MEIA plans to host Malta’s first MEIA Conference, launch youth advocacy programmes, and publish performing arts rate cards to establish standardised remuneration practices. The association also aims to strengthen its partnerships with cultural institutions through memoranda of understanding and develop global collaborations to enhance Malta’s cultural presence internationally.

Additionally, MEIA is introducing support programmes for its members, including legal and financial advisory services.
