Heritage Malta in Ċentru tal-Ilsien Malti collaboration

Heritage Malta, in collaboration with Iċ-Ćentru tal-Ilsien Malti and Saint Vincent de Paul Long-Term Care Facility, has launched a cultural initiative aimed at foreign carers employed in Malta. The programme, held in early January, highlighted the significance of Maltese heritage, language, and culture.

The eight-session programme, spearheaded by Iċ-Ćentru tal-Ilsien Malti, was conducted primarily in Maltese with English support and took place at Saint Vincent de Paul’s premises in Luqa. The course concluded with a final session and a certificate ceremony at the historic Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu, giving participants a first-hand experience of Malta’s cultural landmarks.

As part of the initiative, carers were required to visit three Heritage Malta sites of their choice during the course, encouraging personal exploration and appreciation of Malta’s rich heritage.

Kenneth Gambin, COO of Heritage Malta, underlined the importance of such programmes. “Heritage Malta is committed to making Maltese culture accessible to everyone, including those with fewer opportunities to engage with it. This course showcases the power of collaboration in empowering individuals through history and heritage,” Gambin said.

Dr Maris Camilleri, Acting CEO of Iċ-Ċentru tal-Ilsien Malti, commended the initiative, which was initially developed by her predecessor. “The Maltese language is inseparable from the country’s history. This initiative enhances appreciation of our language by connecting it with the cultural and historical context that shaped it,” she remarked.

Jorgen Souness, CEO of Saint Vincent de Paul Long-Term Care Facility, highlighted the benefits of this initiative for residents and carers alike. “This programme reflects our commitment to employee development and improving communication with residents. It’s encouraging to see carers embrace the challenge of learning about Malta’s unique culture with such determination,” Souness added.

Vanessa Ciantar, Assistant Manager of Heritage Malta’s Education and Outreach Department, expressed her enthusiasm for the project. “The carers’ engagement has been inspiring. They not only gained historical knowledge but also embraced the Maltese language and culture, enriching both their personal and professional lives,” she commented.
