Edward Pirotta’s works reunited in major exhibition at MUŻA

Heritage Malta has launched a landmark exhibition showcasing the art of Edward Pirotta (1939–1968), one of Malta’s leading modern sculptors. The exhibition, now open at MUŻA, the national-community art museum in Valletta, reunites Pirotta’s body of work for the first time in almost six decades.

The exhibition was inaugurated with a lecture celebrating Pirotta’s life and legacy, curated by Professor Joseph Paul Cassar. It provides a rare opportunity to view the artist’s creations, which vividly capture the human form with profound beauty and emotion. Alongside his sculptures, visitors can explore an array of historical documents, medals, photographs, and Pirotta’s personal toolbox.

Professor Cassar highlighted the significance of this initiative: “This is a historic exhibition on a Maltese artist who was almost forgotten. Edward Pirotta tragically passed away at just 29 years of age, but his works live on, allowing us to appreciate his talent through this collection.”

Mario Cutajar, Chairman of Heritage Malta, emphasised the importance of such events in preserving and celebrating Maltese art. “MUŻA must serve as a showcase for Malta’s art and artists. This exhibition restores life to Pirotta’s works and underscores the community’s need for spaces like MUŻA,” he said. Part of the museum will soon be repurposed to further enhance its role as a platform for Maltese artistic heritage.

A comprehensive publication authored by Professor Cassar accompanies the exhibition. The book is the result of 25 years of research and catalogues Pirotta’s works, which are housed in collections across Malta, London, Italy, Australia, the USA, Canada, and Ecuador. Copies are available for purchase at MUŻA and online through Heritage Malta’s store.

The exhibition runs until the end of March 2025, with admission included in the standard museum ticket. Further details can be found on the Heritage Malta website.
