Last month, a Chinese delegation from Jiangsu Medical College visited the Science China Corner of St Margaret College Secondary School Verdala, in Cospicua.
The Chinese delegation consisted of Yin Zhongyong, president of Jiangsu Medical College; Lyu Ying, vice director of the Academic Affairs Office and head of geriatric healthcare and management of JSMC; Huang Cheng, vice-president of TCM School of JSMC; Sun Xiaoyan, vice-director of the Office of International Cooperation and Communication of JSMC; and Raymond Busuttil, consultant adviser to Jiangsu Medical College.
The Chinese diplomatic delegation was welcomed by headmaster Joe Ellul, the founder teacher of the Science China Corner, Martin Azzopardi, and the Science China Corner students.
Student Isaac Mifsud gave an introductory speech explaining the history of the Science China Corner which was founded in 2010 as a Montessori Method of teaching science through Chinese culture.
He said the main aim of the Science China Corner is to enhance multiculturalism among students and involve them in research studies about Chinese culture, science and technology.
He noted that, in fact, students were widening their general knowledge and involving themselves in various projects about China.
Mifsud also spoke about the advances of science and technology in China.
“Science and technology in the People’s Republic of China is growing rapidly. As the People’s Republic of China has become better connected to the global economy, the Chinese government has placed more emphasis on science and technology,” Mifsud said.
“This has led to increases in funding, improved scientific structure, and more money for research. These factors have led to advancements in agriculture, medicine, genetics, and global change. The past 10 years is also a watershed era for China’s progress in science and technology, especially in the high-tech arena.”
During the event, nine selected students presented the themes and content of all the Science China Corner research projects carried out during the first scholastic term. These projects were all related to Chengdu culture in the Sichuan Province, following a diplomatic visit to St Margaret College by a Chinese delegation from Chengdu Municipality in October 2023.
After the presentation of the projects, Yin Zhongyong, president of Jiangsu Medical College, highly commended the students’ hard work and congratulated them for their commitment and research of Chinese culture.
The programme ended with the demonstration of a copy of the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s reply letter held by student Ethan Schembri and the exchange of gifts and the signing of the School Visitors’ Book. At the end of the programme, all participants enjoyed some refreshments.
St Margaret College Science China Corner students and founder teacher expressed their gratitude to the Chinese delegation for their official visit.
They also thanked the Chinese Embassy in Malta, the China Cultural Centre in Malta, the Mediterranean Regional Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Confucius Institute, the Malta-China Friendship Society and the Malta Ministry of Education for their continuous support and help.
