The Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) has announced the appointment of Carlos Debattista and Lara Azzopardi as the new Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, of its Film and TV Advisory Committee. This leadership change comes after the successful tenure of Abigail Mallia and Erica Muscat, who previously held the roles.
Carlos Debattista, an experienced screenwriter, producer, and co-founder of Take//Two production company, will take on the role of Chair. His portfolio includes notable works such as the sitcom Deceduti, dramas Gizelle and L-Evangelisti, and the feature film Limestone Cowboy. His latest project, Castillo, is Malta’s official submission to the Academy Awards 2025. Debattista has been a consistent advocate for promoting Maltese indigenous film and storytelling on a global scale.
Joining him as Co-Chair is Lara Azzopardi, a seasoned professional with over 30 years in the television and media industry. Azzopardi has a rich background as an actress and media personality and holds a Master’s degree in Film Studies from the University of Malta. Her experience and passion for the arts position her as a key figure in driving the committee’s vision forward.
The new leadership has outlined their commitment to fostering a thriving and sustainable film and TV culture in Malta. Their priorities include developing a comprehensive national screen policy to align industry stakeholders, including PBS, Arts Council Malta, and the Malta Film Commission; creating opportunities for professional growth and development within the sector; promoting the export of Maltese productions to international markets; encouraging an inclusive creative environment; and showcasing Malta’s unique identity through film and television.
