Teatru Manoel and FM Theatre Productions have announced their latest collaboration, bringing the six-time Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen to the Maltese stage this February. Featuring a cast of talented local performers, this production is set to captivate audiences with its powerful narrative and compelling music.
The acclaimed musical, with a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson and a score by Grammy, Tony, and Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, explores themes of mental health, identity, and the impact of social media. At its heart is Evan Hansen, a teenager grappling with social anxiety. Encouraged by his therapist, Evan writes letters to himself as a confidence-building exercise. However, when one of his letters ends up in the possession of his classmate, Connor Murphy, who subsequently takes his own life, Evan becomes embroiled in a misunderstanding that spirals into a viral phenomenon.
In this Maltese production, the role of Evan Hansen will be alternated between Kyle Mangani and Luigi Buhagiar, while Kristen Abela and Charlotte Formosa will share the role of Zoe Murphy. The cast also includes Dorothy Bezzina, Nadine Farrugia, Raphael Pace, Thomas Camilleri, Jamie Cardona, and Carla Fenech.
The production is helmed by director Denise Mulholland, with Kris Spiteri as musical director. Set design is by Matthew Cassar, and videography by Dylan Odom will enhance the visual storytelling.
