Netflix announces ‘Little House on the Prairie’ reboot

The streaming giant is working on a brand-new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, which are set in 19th century Minnesota.

More than 40 years since the original, ground-breaking Little House on the Prairie series graced TV sets across the world, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved story of survival and family ties is being remade for a modern generation thanks to Netflix.

Although not much else is yet known about it yet, one thing Netflix has announced is that it will be co-produced by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who is known for her work on The Boys and The Vampire Diaries.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sonnenshine explained that she fell “deeply in love with these books” when she was five years old. “They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”

The Little House on the Prairie series is an American Western historical drama that unfolds between the 1870s and 1890s. It follows the Ingalls family, who live on a farm in Minnesota, as they engage with each other, grow, build relationships, and deal with the reality of living on the frontier.

As one of the world’s most famous TV series, it ran for a total of 208 episodes between September 1974 and March 1983, and has never been off air since. Yet, for a modern audience, the visuals and pace may feel somewhat slow.

Even so, Netflix’s new adaptation aims to keep the elements that made the original series so successful, saying that they hope this will be “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West [serving a] kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

It is uncertain when the new adaptation will drop, though chances are we’ll have to wait till 2026 or 2027. Stay tuned as we’ll bring you more information in the near future!
