Heritage Malta launches free transport for seniors to promote sea conservation awareness

Heritage Malta has introduced a new initiative aimed at engaging senior citizens in discussions on Malta’s maritime history and contemporary environmental challenges. The programme, Clean Oceans and Mapping Our Seas, will provide free transport for elderly participants to visit the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu.

The initiative forms part of the ongoing An Island at the Crossroads exhibition, which explores Malta’s rich maritime past. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the Clean Oceans and Mapping Our Seas display, which highlights the environmental threats facing Malta’s waters. The exhibition also features an immersive experience simulating the depths of a Malta Drydocks dock.

The programme, set to run until March 2025, will be available on weekdays, offering two time slots—morning and afternoon. Weekend sessions may also be considered depending on demand. The museum is fully accessible to ensure ease of participation.

Funded through the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021, the initiative is part of a collaborative effort between Heritage Malta and Norway’s Stavanger Maritime Museum. The partnership seeks to document and safeguard Malta’s maritime heritage while addressing issues related to pollution and climate change.

Heritage Malta is encouraging stakeholders involved in elderly care and social development to reach out for further details. Interested participants can contact the agency via email at education.heritagemalta@gov.mt or call (+356) 2295 4300 for more information.
