Heritage Malta brings history to life at Fort St Angelo and San Pawl Milqi

San Pawl Milqi

Heritage Malta is offering history enthusiasts an opportunity to experience Malta’s past with two distinctive events in February. Fort St Angelo will transport visitors back to the medieval period, while San Pawl Milqi will open its doors for a rare commemoration of St Paul’s Shipwreck.

On Sunday, February 2, Fort St Angelo in Birgu will host Castrum Maris, a historical re-enactment bringing the 15th century to life. From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, members of the Historical Re-enactment Group Malta will depict scenes from the stronghold’s medieval past. Visitors will have the chance to observe soldiers dressed in period attire and learn about the weaponry and supplies used for the fort’s defence. Standard entry fees apply, though Heritage Malta members, students, and senior passport holders can attend free of charge.

A week later, on Monday, February 10, San Pawl Milqi in Burmarrad will open to mark St Paul’s Shipwreck. The site, believed to be where Publius, the Protos of the island, hosted St Paul around A.D. 60, will offer guided tours and a religious service. A Mass in Maltese will be celebrated at 10:00 am, with guided tours in Maltese and English at 9:00 am and 11:00 am, respectively. Due to limited spaces, pre-booking is required.

An exclusive preview for Heritage Malta members is scheduled for Saturday, 8th February. Attendees will not only receive a guided tour but will also have the chance to participate in hands-on archaeological activities, including excavation and artefact cataloguing. This event is free for members, though booking in advance is necessary.
