Benji Cachia to release debut solo album

Akshara is set to launch on April 25.

Renowned Maltese musician Benji Cachia, better known as ‘Banjo Rancho’, has embarked on an exciting new chapter in his career with the release of his debut solo album, Akshara planned for April. A culmination of years of study, practice, and collaboration, Akshara is an immersive soundscape that weaves together traditional, modern, and experimental influences into a single, cinematic musical experience.

With a career spanning over two decades, Benji has built a reputation as a versatile and innovative percussionist. He is widely known for his intricate, odd rhythms and ‘chameleon-like groove’. Having performed alongside some of the world’s most accomplished musicians, including the award-winning percussionist Pete Lockett, Fernando Hernandez (original drummer of Queens of the Stone Age), and renowned artists such as John Butler, Plini, and Guthrie Govan, Benji has established himself as a significant figure in the global music scene.

For years, Benji toured extensively as the leader and founder of The Ranch, a vibrant and experimental jazz band, performing across Europe and producing three studio albums. However, his passion for global music traditions and his desire to craft a unique sound led him to step into the spotlight as a solo artist. Akshara is the result of this journey, blending a diverse array of instruments, from the drums, guitars, and bass to traditional elements such as the tabla, darbuka, frame drum, balafon, and even his own home-made instrument, the Benjicordofone. This fusion of sounds is further enhanced by live effects, creating an atmospheric and dynamic listening experience.

The album has already garnered praise from industry professionals, with Pete Lockett describing it as “full-bodied and powerful,” while The Steve Miller Band drummer Gordy Knudtson hailed Benji’s playing and energy as “outstanding.”

With Akshara, Benji Cachia offers listeners a deeply personal and innovative exploration of rhythm, melody, and cultural synergy, marking a bold new phase in his musical evolution. As he continues to carve out his own path, his journey as a solo artist is set to captivate audiences far and wide.
