What drew you to this present this particular play?
I was drawn to Deathtrap because of its clever structure and intricate plot. Ira Levin’s ability to blend suspense, humor, and unexpected twists makes it a unique and engaging experience for both the audience and the performers. The complexity of the characters and the constant shift in tone offer a lot of creative challenges, which I find exciting as a director.
How are you interpreting the script?
My interpretation of the script stays true to Ira Levin’s original work. I have not made any significant changes to the setting or modernized the script. The focus is on capturing the essence of the play—its suspense, character dynamics, and intricate plot—as Levin intended, while still bringing it to life in a way that resonates with the audience today. The cast is a mix of veteran actors and newcomers, all very talented, who have brought in their own ideas on how the character should be interpreted. They are very open to adapting, which allows us to bring the characters to life in a way that is both natural and easy for the actors and easy for the audience to understand and empathize with.
How is the show being staged?
The show is being staged with an emphasis on staying true to the late 1970s time period. The costumes will reflect that era, helping to set the tone and context for the characters. As for the set and props, we aim to create a space that feels authentic to the play’s setting, while also enhancing the suspenseful atmosphere. We’re also incorporating a soundboard to create an immersive auditory experience, and the lighting will be used creatively to underscore key moments and shifts in tension throughout the play.
There are quite a few anecdotes from rehearsals to share at a later date: unfortunately at this point I would give away plot twists if I shared them with you, so I’ll keep quiet! #nospoilers
