The popular Fonzu l-Fenek song has been played two million times on the YouTube video streaming platform.
Written and composed by Michael Piscopo, the song was launched in 2013 as part of the Fonzu l-Fenek initiative, promoting healthy eating and sustainable lifestyles for primary schoolchildren.
The character of the loveable rabbit was created as a mascot for transmitting positive messages about nutrition, physical activity and respect for the environment among the younger generations through educational resources, books, live appearances in schools and public events, and an active online presence.
Suzanne Piscopo, University of Malta lecturer and the driving force, together with her husband Michael, behind Fonzu l-Fenek, said that the song undoubtedly contributed to Fonzu’s cross-generational popularity.
“Wherever we go – in schools, local council events or other occasions – people of all ages know the song by heart (or at least the refrain) and are keen to sing along. It is a happy tune that brings joy to those who sing or listen to it, while passing on some important educational messages.”

Michael agrees and attributes much of the song’s success to the upbeat melody, simple and memorable lyrics, and to the voice of singer Phyllisienne Brincat, who was also responsible for the musical arrangement.
“Reaching such a significant milestone is a source of pride for us (not many songs in Maltese reach these figures) and we are thankful for the continuous encouragement we receive from parents, grandparents, educators and public entities… and the thousands of young Fonzu fans. It keeps us going.”
