The Embassy of France in Malta is this week hosting Trans Europe Express, a project by Ensemble Des Équilibres that shines a spotlight on women composers in contemporary music.

Through concerts, workshops, masterclasses and conferences, this initiative aims to enhance the visibility of women in music composition and inspire the next generation of women composers.

Among other events, a trio of musicians from the ensemble will be performing in a concert at Spazju Kreattiv (Space B) in Valletta on Friday, October 3, at 7pm.

Featuring Agnès Pyka (violin), Jordan Costard (cello) and Balint Barath (piano), the concert will showcase original works by César Franck, Mariella Cassar Cordina and Joaquin Turina.

The sold-out concert will be followed by a conference at 8pm. This event forms part of the 2025-26 Spazju Kreattiv Music Series, organised in partnership with the French Embassy and Creative Europe.

Trans Europe Express also includes a conference on women composers on Wednesday, October 1, at Bla Kliem in Senglea at 6pm, followed by a composition masterclass, and a workshop for young women composers at the same venue on Saturday at 10am. Discover the full programme here.

About the ensemble

Taking paths less travelled, rejecting labels and embracing music as an exchange, Des Équilibres nurtures the ambition of creating a multilayered dialogue through its artistic project.

This dialogue unfolds between musicians from different backgrounds, aesthetics and across artistic disciplines. Founded in 2006 by violinist Pyka, Des Équilibres explores new creative territories while maintaining a strong connection to tradition.

From the classical era to contemporary works, the ensemble embraces the full spectrum of chamber music, with a particular focus on rare or previously unrecorded pieces.
