New books support teaching Maltese as a foreign language

The book series by Charles Daniel Saliba

BDL Publishing has issued the second level of Charles Daniel Saliba’s Learning Maltese (Maltese as a Foreign Language for Juniors) bilingual (Maltese/English) series.

Based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and covering ‘Level A2, Elementary’, this level features two books: Learning Maltese 3/Nitgħallem il-Malti 3 and Learning Maltese 4/Nitgħallem il-Malti 4.

The new books follow a progressive learning approach by building on the first level. Learners can master basic grammar rules using a thematic approach; hear each dialogue or content read in standard Maltese by native speakers, familiarise themselves with Maltese culture, and engage in various practical activities for effective learning and revision.

Learners will practise the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – and use the ‘Learning Outcomes’ section to verify whether they have achieved the aims of the unit.

“Such publications help to preserve Malta’s linguistic and cultural heritage”

Saliba said the project will support not only the children of foreign nationals living in Malta and Gozo in continuing to learn the language, but also children of Maltese descent living abroad.

“Such publications help to preserve Malta’s linguistic and cultural heritage, so that our national language continues to be actively spoken and maintained,” he added.

The books come with audio files and an answer booklet for the included exercises, which can be downloaded for free from https://bdlbooks.com/blog/introducing-learning-maltese/.

The books in this series are approved by Malta’s National Literacy Agency. For more information, visit www.charlesdanielsaliba.com.
