The cast and crew of Hoi Polloi Theatre Company’s Hocus Pocus: The Pantoween are in full swing at St Aloysius College Theatre, in Birkirkara, gearing up for their Charity Dress Rehearsal on Thursday (today) and the official premiere on Friday − Halloween night.
This marks a historic moment for the company − the long-awaited return of the Pantoween after its last staging in 2005.
Under the artistic direction of Marco Calleja, this all-new production blends the classic charm of panto with the sparkle of the season, promising a magical, laugh-out-loud adventure for the whole family.
“This isn’t about celebrating Halloween − it’s about celebrating the fun, the chaos, the tricks, the treats, and above all, the power of family and hope,” Calleja says. “It’s a story with heart − wrapped in humour, music and a little bit of mischief.”
Leading the cast is Katherine Brown as the wickedly iconic Winifred Sanderson, joined by Lara Agius as Mary and Talitha Dimech as Sarah. Together, the Sanderson Sisters bring delightful mayhem to the stage with their trademark blend of comedy and chaos.
Adding to the mix is Eric Grech, taking on the role of the show’s flamboyant and larger-than-life Dame − the ‘Mayor of Mayhem’! Known for his work in Simpatiċi, Grech’s infectious energy and impeccable timing promise to light up the stage.
The heroic trio − Sam Casha (Max), Leah Formosa (Alison) and Amy Farrugia (Dany) − lead the audience through a whirlwind of adventure as they learn that bravery, friendship and love can conquer even the wildest of spells.
With a company of 22 actors and a 19-member child ensemble, this production is the result of months of rehearsal, creative collaboration and community spirit. The cast has been working tirelessly three times a week since summer, bringing to life a story that’s equal parts heartwarming and hilarious.
“This isn’t about celebrating Halloween − it’s about celebrating the fun, the chaos, the tricks, the treats, and above all, the power of family and hope”

“This production celebrates teamwork in every sense,” Calleja adds. “From the live music and choreography to complex scene changes and comic timing − every person involved has poured heart and joy into making it truly special.”
The Charity Dress Rehearsal on Thursday will welcome special guests and community partners for an exclusive first look at the full show before the official premiere on Friday.
Audiences are encouraged to come in costume, making Hocus Pocus: The Pantoween a colourful extension of their seasonal festivities.
The show is being staged at St Aloysius College Theatre, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7.30pm, with an extra show on Saturday at 3pm. Tickets from showshappening.com.
