The exceptionally close bond between the renowned English author J.R.R. Tolkien and his mother, Mabel, will be explored during a public lecture at Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria this evening.
Mabel’s conversion to Catholicism and subsequent hardships are said to have shaped her son’s faith, outlook and later literary themes of sacrifice, suffering and enduring love.
J.R.R. Tolkien is the author of the epic fantasy novels The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which have been turned into cinema blockbusters in the past years.
The 7.30pm lecture, entitled ‘Like Mother, Like Son: J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘Conversion’ to Catholicism’, will be delivered by Fr Geoffrey G. Attard.
Bejn il-Veru u l-Ħlieqa
Another lecture is being held at the museum tomorrow at 11am.
Judge Toni Abela will engage in a public dialogue with notary Christian Zammit focusing on his lesser-known role as a short-story writer. The discussion will offer insight into Zammit’s creative process, inspirations and the ways in which his writing blends elements of reality and imagination, hence the title of the event Bejn il-Veru u l-Ħlieqa.
The event is being held in collaboration with Kite Group and proceedings will be in Maltese.
Both lectures are free, but seat reservations are encouraged by sending an e-mail to events@heartofgozo.org.mt.
