KorMalta, Malta’s national choir, is riding high after two sold-out performances this month.
Faure’s Requiem, on March 6, drew a full house and concluded with a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. This was followed by another sold-out performance for Her Story in Song on International Women’s Day.
Faure’s Requiem brought together the KorMalta Ensemble with guest musicians and renowned guest conductor Christopher Muscat. This concert, the second performance from the lunchtime series of KorMalta Ensemble, was held at St Catherine of Italy’s church in Valletta.
Her Story in Song, held at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta, celebrated the creativity and artistic contributions of women across musical history. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, highlighting KorMalta’s commitment to support community well-being through the power of song.
The concert brought together the female voices of KorMalta, in a selected repertoire honouring overlooked composers and musical pieces, while celebrating contemporary musical works by local and international women.
Female actresses from Teatru Malta also gave their contribution by reciting poems complementing the singers’ repertoire.
“We believe music brings people together and can make a real difference,” KorMalta’s principal conductor, Riccardo Bianchi, said. “This concert celebrated the achievements of women, past and present, while also helping support our community in a meaningful way.”
A new chapter
This year marks an important milestone for Malta’s national choir: the first season in which it has launched its own dedicated productions.
The choir expanded its artistic vision with two distinct concert series − a lunchtime series featuring the full ensemble and an evening chamber-formation series − designed to promote choral music to wider and more varied audiences throughout the year.
The launch models the choir’s evolution from guest performer to an independent creative organisation within Malta’s cultural landscape, committed to connect audiences with music while supporting philanthropic causes.
KorMalta is part of the National Agency of Performing Arts (NAPA).
