Sovereign Trust (Malta) Ltd, part of the worldwide Sovereign Group, in association with The Sovereign Art Foundation, has opened an exhibition of works by students who took part in the ninth annual Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize for Malta and Gozo.

The competition was established with the aim of celebrating the importance of art in the education system and to recognise the quality of work which can be produced by local students.

All local secondary schools and colleges in Malta and Gozo were invited to participate, by nominating and submitting the best artworks produced by their students.

From all the submissions, 30 have been selected and are currently on display at The Marriott Hotel in Balluta Bay, St Julian’s.

Public invited to vote

During the exhibition, visitors are invited to vote for their favourite piece. Votes will be collated in order for the Art Foundation to award the Public Vote Prize to the winning student. The artist behind this piece will win €300 and their school will win €800 to be utilised by the school’s Art Department or for the creation of one.

Additionally, an international panel of judges will select The Judges’ Prize. The student producing this art piece will receive €500 and the school, €1,500.

The Sovereign Art Foundation is being supported again this year by Art Council Malta, who will present their own prize worth up to €2,000 towards further art education of one of the finalists either in Malta or abroad.

The exhibition at The Marriott Hotel runs until March 30. One may also vote online here.

‘Exciting time’

The winners of the Public Prize and the Judges’ Prize will go on to represent Malta in the SAF Global Prize to compete with other prize winners of similar Art Foundation student prizes held in various countries around the globe.

“This is an exciting time for us at the Sovereign Art Foundation,” Stephen Griffiths, managing director of Sovereign Trust Malta, said.

“Nine years marks a tremendous accomplishment not only for the team at SAF but also for the teachers who have given us their support over the years. Exhibiting 30 finalists is a new milestone in the development of the Art Prize. I invite everyone interested in art to come along, view the remarkable work of our talented students and vote for your favourite piece. You could be supporting the next star of the art world.”
