A new contemporary art space, axis_, is opening its doors in Attard today, introducing a fresh platform for critical artistic engagement in Malta. Located within The Butler’s House beside the historic Villa Bologna, the gallery reimagines a heritage site as a dynamic environment for contemporary cultural production, marking a significant addition to the island’s evolving art landscape.
The transformation of The Butler’s House lies at the core of axis_’s identity. Once a building defined by its supporting role within a larger estate, it has been carefully adapted into a space that fosters dialogue, experimentation and reflection.
Rather than imposing a dominant architectural statement, the intervention respects the building’s historical integrity while quietly integrating the infrastructure required for contemporary exhibitions. The result is a setting where architecture recedes into the background, allowing artistic practices to take precedence.
Co-founder Maria McKenna describes the approach as a balance between preservation and activation.
“The future of heritage lies in how we inhabit it, not simply how we preserve it,” she said.
She notes that across Malta, conversations around heritage are evolving and that the question is “no longer only about how we preserve, but how we activate: how spaces can contribute meaningfully to contemporary cultural life”.
Within this context, Maria explains that “axis_ emerges from this position: as a platform that connects past and present through living artistic practice, creating continuity”.
The team behind axis_ combines strategic and artistic expertise. The managerial structure, led by Mario Cassar, Maria Mc Kenna and Marie Cassar (co-founders of the gallery), provides operational stability and long-term development, while the artistic direction led by Elyse Tonna, defines the artistic and strategic vision and related conceptual framework and artistic programme.
The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, Nothing is Clear, opens today and runs until May 29. Curated by Tonna, the group show sets the tone for axis_’s programme, foregrounding complexity and ambiguity as defining conditions of contemporary life. Bringing together Maltese and Malta-based artists, the exhibition explores how overlapping social, political and historical forces continue to shape present realities.
The works on display engage with themes such as continuity, uncertainty and the persistence of systemic structures across time. In doing so, the exhibition reflects a curatorial approach that prioritises critical inquiry over resolution. It positions art not as a means of providing answers, but as a framework through which questions can be examined and rearticulated.
The exhibition is a satellite event of the Malta Biennale 2026, situating the gallery within a wider international context from the outset. This connection underscores the gallery’s ambition to operate beyond local boundaries, fostering dialogue between artists, curators and institutions across the Mediterranean and Europe.
