Renowned Maltese artist James Vella Clark is proud to present Chronicles In Colour: 25 Years of Creative Evolution, a landmark retrospective exhibition celebrating his artistic journey over the past twenty-five years. Featuring close to 40 works, the exhibition will open on May 2, 2025, and run until June 22, 2025, at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta.
The exhibition, curated by Anthony Galea, will trace Vella Clark’s artistic development from his early expressionist landscapes to his more recent bold abstract explorations.
The exhibition will portray how the artist’s journey has been shaped by a deep connection to the landscape, initially depicted through urbanistic views before evolving into emotional and conceptual representations of human experience and how over time, his landscapes merged with abstract forms, giving rise to a distinctive and highly personal visual language.
For the first time, the exhibition will also be accompanied by a specially curated catalogue, providing a deeper exploration of Vella Clark’s artistic evolution and the significance of his work within the contemporary Maltese art scene.
Chronicles in Colour has found the proud support of Antes Insurance, Ganado Advocates, Calamatta Cuschieri Moneybase, Corporate ID Group and Aromi D Vini Wine Shop.
Born in 1975, James Vella Clark is one of Malta’s main exponents of expressionism in Malta. He started studying art at six years of age but it was only in 2000, that he started exploring the expressionist idiom through renditions of the traditional landscape in bold colours.
In 2001, he made his public artistic debut with his first solo exhibition “Beyond Perspectives” followed by several solo exhibitions in Malta, and abroad namely in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New York. Over the years he was also invited to participate in collective exhibitions in Barcelona, Florence, Brussels, Duisburg, Vienna, and London.
Today, the artist’s main idiom is abstraction which lends mostly to the abstract expressionist movement of the fifties and sixties. Indeed, if we could speak of a movement or school of expressionism in Malta, Vella Clark would definitely belong to it. This, together with his chromatically charged landscapes dotted with symbolic details, are among the traits that make Vella Clark’s work distinctive.
