‘Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel’ offers glimpse into how children used to live in times gone by
Astrid Zahra, director of Lasco Supermarket, presenting a copy of the book ‘Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel’ to Claudine Sawyer, assistant head of Żejtun Primarja School ‘A’.

A large number of copies of the third book in the Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel series were recently donated to Żejtun Primary School ‘A’.

The latest book is a collection of new stories in the Karamellu series, interspersed with visuals specially designed by CN Creative Designs, about childhood in a Maltese village at a time when the television, the computer, the internet and the mobile phone did not exist yet.

The protagonist, Karamellu, is a boy born and raised in a working class family that lives on the outskirts of Żejtun, in an area known as Ir-Raħal t’Isfel.

Author Charles Buttigieg, who was invited to the book presentation, explained that the character of Karamellu is based on him as a child. He added that these stories offer a good picture of how children used to live in times gone by. The stories are intended mostly for the new generations, to help them get to know more about the culture and customs of the past in a Maltese village.
