5 hobbies to pick up this January

New year, new skills!

It’s the time of year when everyone’s making New Year resolutions, but we all know most of them will be forgotten by the end of the month. Why not pick up a new hobby that you enjoy instead? Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Digital photography

Although this can be an expensive hobby, you can save on costs by using your mobile phone. Invest in some lenses (you can get good ones for less than €50 off Amazon) and watch some YouTube videos before heading off to the beach or on a scenic hiking trail to try out your new skills.

2. Knitting or crocheting

I’d say this is one of the most underrated hobbies. Knitting and crocheting are relaxing hobbies that can result in some pretty cosy home and wardrobe items while also exercising the mind. Grab a ball of yarn and get to stitching.

3. Volunteering

Give back to the community by giving some of your time to the less fortunate. Whether at shelters, with the elderly, or walking dogs at a sanctuary. Volunteering not only fills your time with something productive, but the feeling of knowing that you’ve helped someone leaves you with a peaceful feeling.

4. Yoga

If you’re not into hardcore weight training like me, you may want to go for yoga classes. Fair warning – it’s not as easy as it looks! Move through the positions and strengthen your muscles while also increasing the flexibility of both your body and mind.

5. Gardening

Gardening is a meditative hobby that allows you to enjoy the fruits of your labour – literally. You can plant a patch in a garden, fill your balcony with pots of herbs and flowers, or decorate your house with indoor plants.
