When it comes to make-up, the 90s are back

Celebrities like Hailey Bieber have been spotted wearing smudged eyeliner and make-up-free skin.

Following 20 years of make-up trends that saw us pile on products, contouring, master winged eyeliners, and more, the grunge, free-spirited make-up of the 90s is starting to make a much-welcome resurgence.

Spearheaded by celebrities like Hailey Bieber, the 90s grunge make-up look is defined by its almost make-up-free skin, with one’s complexion proudly showing, nude lips, earthy eyeshadow colours, and smudgy eyeliner achieved by using black pencil eyeliner.

As explained by make-up artist Lisa Eldridge, who recently spoke to Vogue about the trend, this comeback is the direct result of the last few decades’ obsession with perfect make-up. Indeed, as far as cycles go, this mirrors what happened in the 90s, when the 80s heavy make-up started falling out of favour.

Although this trend is easier to ace than many we’ve seen recently, there are a few tricks that can help you achieve the look. For example, putting Vaseline on your eyelids, lips, and cheeks gives your overall make-up a grungier, edgier feel. Meanwhile, putting concealer on your lips helps make the look even more 90s-perfect.

Undoubtedly, many more ‘hacks’ will make it onto TikTok and Instagram over the next few weeks and months, so it pays to follow your favourite beauty influencers!
