We all know that trends come and go, but few haircuts have made as many re-emergences as the pixie haircut. Indeed, it’s back again, with Vogue US’s beauty and wellness editor, Hannah Coates, naming it the ‘It-Girl Haircut’ of 2024.
The pixie cut, which is a hairstyle defined by its cropped layers that are shorter at the back and sides, and then longer on top, is a classic cut for women that has stood the test of time.
Over the years, it has been sported by the likes of dancer and singer Josephine Baker in the 1920s and 30s; actress and activist Audrey Hepburn in the 50s; cultural icon and model Twiggy in the 60s; original supermodel Linda Evangelista in the 80s; Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry in the 90s and noughties; and Emmy-Award-winning actress Michelle Williams in the early 2010s.
Writing about this hair trend, Coates goes on to offer those wanting to get the pixie two pieces of advice via hair experts. The first is that such a cut tends to look better with an all-over hue rather than with highlights. The second is that this is no low-maintenance haircut, as it will lose its shape quickly once your hair grows out.
