As the temperature rises, there’s nothing better than curling up under the freezing AC – electricity permitting – with a good movie. Here are five of my best summer watches.

1. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
IMDb: 7.8/10

Set in the sun-drenched Italian countryside, this romantic drama follows the blossoming relationship between Elio, a young Italian-American, and Oliver, a visiting American scholar. As they spend the summer together, their bond deepens and challenges them both emotionally. The film beautifully captures the intensity of first love and the idyllic atmosphere of a summer in Italy.

2. Palm Springs (2020)

Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
IMDb: 7.4/10

In this refreshing romantic comedy, two wedding guests, Nyles and Sarah, find themselves stuck in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again. As they navigate their bizarre predicament, they develop a unique connection and re-examine their lives. The film’s witty humour and heartfelt moments make it a perfect summer watch.

3. The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)

Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
IMDb: 7.4/10

This psychological thriller, set against the stunning backdrop of the Italian Riviera, follows Tom Ripley, a young man with a talent for impersonation and deceit. When he is sent to bring back a wealthy playboy from Italy, Ripley becomes entangled in a web of lies and murder. The film’s scenic locations make it a captivating summer film, although it has its fair dose of creepiness.

4. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Rotten Tomatoes: 62%
IMDb: 6.8/10

After a painful divorce, a writer impulsively buys a villa in Tuscany, seeking a fresh start. As she renovates her new home, she discovers the joys and challenges of a new life in the Italian countryside. You’ve got beautiful scenery, an inspiring story of personal transformation and the perfect summer escape.

5. Before Sunset (2004)

Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
IMDb: 8.1/10

This romantic drama continues the story of Jesse and Céline, who reunite in Paris nine years after their first meeting. As they walk through the city’s picturesque streets, they discuss their lives, dreams, and the choices they’ve made. We love the film’s natural dialogue and the explosive chemistry between the characters. Perfect if you’re after a poignant and intimate summer movie.
