The early 2000s gave us some pretty ‘fetch’ chick flicks, including The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, 13 Going on 30, and the cult-classic Mean Girls. Now, one of the best-performing films of that genre—Disney’s Freaky Friday—is getting a sequel!
Released in 2003, Freaky Friday is a fantasy comedy film in which teenage musician Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) and her psychologist mother, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), wake up one morning to realise they’re in each other’s bodies. This leads to some pretty hilarious drama, as well as some heartwarming mother-daughter moments.
The film was an instant success with critics and audiences alike, grossing over $160 million on a budget of $26 million. It also garnered Curtis a Golden Globe nomination. It’s also gone on to become a classic of the golden age of chick flicks, and fans have been hoping for a sequel for over 20 years.
Well, that wish has finally come true, with Disney recently sharing a snap of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan outside of their trailers, with the name tags reversed as is custom for Freaky Friday. But that’s not all! 2000s heartthrob Chad Michael Murray, will also be returning as Anna’s love-interest, Jake. Harold Gould, who played the grandpa, and Mark Harmon, who played Tess’s fiancé Ryan, are also set to reprise their roles.
While we don’t know much else about the production, we do know it’s currently in the filming stage and that it will be released in theatres in 2025. As for the plotline, we’re pretty sure there will be some form of body swapping at some point – it just wouldn’t be that freaky a Friday otherwise, right?
