It’s hard to think about the 1990s without remembering the impact the 1992 hit BBC TV series, Absolutely Fabulous, had on our collective consciousness. Its concoction of fashion, drugs, alcohol, witty remarks, and off-the-wall humour remain a milestone in the world of television, particularly when it comes to female-led comedy.
Now, after more than eight years, Jennifer Saunders (Edina Monsoon), Joanna Lumley (Patsy Stone), Julia Sawalha (Saffy Monsoon), and Jane Horrocks (Bubble), are reuniting for a one-off documentary special, taking viewers behind-the-scenes of the NSFW series, and celebrating the groundbreaking impact the show had on pop culture and comedy, alike.
Titled Absolutely Fabulous: Inside Out, the documentary is set to air on the UK’s UKTV Gold comedy channel later on this year, and will also feature plenty of celebrity cameos, as well as memorable moments featuring the late June Whitfield, who played Edina’s mother.
Speaking about the project, Jennifer Saunders, who was also the creator of the show, said: “I loved making Ab Fab, but I can’t remember a great deal, so much of this retrospective is a revelation to me. Thank you Gold for this kind and helpful programme.”
Ab Fab, as it’s often shortened to, ran for five seasons between 1992 and 2003, and returned for three episodes in 2011 and 2012. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie was then released in 2016. The series, as well as its stars, won numerous BAFTAs and British Comedy Awards for their work.
