Setting the scene

When did you last see a great romantic comedy filmed in Malta – and under the stars?
Villa Bologna

Villa Bologna in Attard is the stunning setting for Cinema Under the Stars, an event organised by environment NGO Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar.

The lawn of the 18th-century stately home will be the unique, outdoor and evocative auditorium, where cinemagoers can bring their own blanket, chair, or cushion to get comfortable under the stars.

On August 17, the majestic gates of the opulent baroque building will open onto an outdoor cinema, where three films produced in Malta will be screened, showcasing the the island’s best.

Among these is the Maltese romantic comedy 20,000 Reasons. Described as “family drama galore”, its actors Marylou Coppini and Nanette Brimmer as the brilliant mothers-in-law and Chris Dingli as the priest will guarantee side-splitting laughs.

The charming feature film follows Sophie Bellizzi, a hard-working perfectionist racing against time to marry before her 30th birthday to secure her grandmother’s substantial inheritance. Filled with humour and heart, it explores family dynamics and the lengths we go to for love.

Other movies to be screened on the night in aid of FAA include Dar ir-Rummien, a heart-warming tale of young love across generations, and The Pinnacle of Excellence, an award-winning environmental documentary by Roy Davidson, where viewers can explore the diverse ecosystem of Ras il-Ħobż, one of the most unique dive sites in the Maltese Islands.

Cinemagoers will also have the unique opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with Malcolm Galea, the screenwriter of feature film, along with director Jameson Cucciardi and actors Aldo Zammit and Naomi Said. Susan Roland from Screen Malta will also be in attendance to share her insights and experiences.
