5 budget-friendly ways to enjoy the last weeks of summer

Not everything has to cost an arm and a leg, if you know where to look.
September 15 sees one of the biggest feasts taking place in Żabbar.

I don’t know about you, but I’m totally broke. Which is not to say that I want to say goodbye to my social life. Happily, my friends are all as poor as I am and don’t turn up their nose at some free entertainment. Here’s my five top picks.

1. Attend a festa

As summer winds down, Malta’s villages continue to celebrate their traditional festas, vibrant community festivals honoring local patron saints. These events are filled with free entertainment, including colorful processions, fireworks, and live music. Għajnsielem, Naxxar, Mellieħa, Żabbar and Valletta all have massive celebrations coming up in September, so why not enjoy some authentic Maltese culture before it dies off?

2. Explore public art and street murals

Malta has a growing street art scene, with many public spaces in cities like Valletta, Sliema, San Ġwann Pembroke and Vittoriosa showcasing impressive murals and installations. Take a self-guided tour to discover these creative expressions, many of which offer insights into Maltese culture and history. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, immersing yourself in local art while wandering the charming streets.

3. Discover Malta’s historic gardens

Now’s the perfect time of year to enjoy our beautiful public gardens as the tourists and the heat are both waning. Visit the San Anton Gardens in Attard or the Lower Barrakka Gardens in Valletta to enjoy lush greenery, fountains, and peaceful walking paths. These gardens are free to enter and provide a serene environment to relax, read a book, or simply enjoy the last of the summer weather.
