5 ways to source the best bargains at artisanal markets

Arrive early and get ready to haggle!

If artisan markets are one of your favoutie autumn activities, chances are we’ll be haggling for the same treasure at some point in the near future. Joking apart, here are my tips for making the best of it. Some, like haggling, tend to work better when travelling, but the rest are all up

Buy in bulk
If you find multiple items you like from a single vendor, ask about a discount for buying in bulk. Artisans are often open to offering deals when you purchase several pieces at once. This strategy works well when you’re shopping for gifts or looking to buy a variety of products from the same stall.

Arrive early for the best selection
One of the best strategies for finding bargains is to arrive as soon as the market opens. Artisans often display their most unique or limited pieces early in the day, and you’ll have a better chance to browse without the crowds. Early birds can often spot hidden gems before they’re picked over by other shoppers. Yes, we’re talking 5AM in Birgu.

Get to know the artisans
Building rapport with the artisans can give you an advantage in finding deals. If you show genuine interest in their work and ask questions about the process, materials, or inspiration, they may be more inclined to offer you a discount or let you in on special items that aren’t immediately on display.

Haggle politely and respectfully
Haggling is often expected at artisanal markets, particularly abroad, as Malta doesn’t seem to have taken to this. But the key is to be polite and respectful. Start by asking if there’s flexibility in the price, or if a small discount is possible, especially if you’re buying multiple items. Approach the negotiation as a friendly conversation, rather than a demand, and you’re more likely to get a better price.

Shop at the end of the day
While arriving early has its benefits, shopping toward the end of the market day can also yield bargains. Artisans may be more willing to lower their prices to avoid taking unsold items back with them. You can take advantage of this by politely inquiring if there are any end-of-day discounts available.
