Horror fans across the world are currently celebrating some of the biggest news coming out of Hollywood, which is that actress Jennifer Love Hewitt will be back as Julie James in the sequel to the classic American slasher film.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson for Sony, the sequel to I Know What You Did Summer is set to be a pretty cool reunion for horror fans as Hewitt will also be joined by Freddie Prinze Jr, who played Ray Bronson.

The cast will also include Chase Sui Wonders of Bodies Bodies Bodies fame, Madelyn Cline from Stranger Things, Sarah Pidgeon from Lazareth, and Tyriq Withers, who plays the role of Tim in Tell Me Lies, among others.

Released in 1997, the original film became somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon, being parodied in an episode of Dawson’s Creek, referenced in Scary Movie, and even making it onto an episode of The Simpsons. Amazon also has run a whole series based on the property in film in 2021.

In the original film, the story begins with a group of friends trying to bury the fact that they ran over a pedestrian, before a series of events unfold that shows that someone actually knows and is making them pay for it.

Speaking to Variety magazine about the role reprisal, Hewitt said that, “[Julie is] a very special person to me because that movie changed my career.

“She changed my belief in myself… Being able to know that I could see things before they happened and make them happen, and put that out to the universe, and be rewarded in that way — that was a beautiful lesson for me in my life. It has helped me tremendously in my almost 36 years now of doing this.”
Rather surprisingly, the sequel will also be called I Know What You Did Last Summer and will be released in the US in July 2025.
