Every year, Maltese families who have embarked on the adoption journey come together at an event that celebrates their efforts and unique experiences.
This heartwarming gathering, organised by the Adoption Services within the Directorate of Alternative Care (DAC), provides a safe space for adoptive parents and children to share their stories, build connections and support one another.
Many attendees of the latest such gathering highlighted the growing awareness of adoption and the challenges it entails. However, they also emphasised the need for greater community sensitivity towards the adoption journey, fostering an environment of understanding and belonging.
For many children, going through the adoption system can be an isolating experience, which is why some may initially feel hesitant to attend such events. However, they often come to realise that these gatherings are designed to combat this feeling of isolation by offering them an opportunity to connect with peers in a community where differences such as ethnicity and biological ties fade away, fostering a profound sense of belonging.
This annual event not only celebrates achievements but also reinforces the message that no one walks this journey alone.
The Adoption Service within the DAC provides ongoing support to families embarking on this life-changing journey, offering guidance from initial training and home study reports to navigating both local and international adoption processes.
Moreover, recognising the emotional challenges of the pre-adoption waiting period, professionals conduct regular phone check-ins and facilitate pre-adoption support groups to help families stay connected and informed.
Post-adoption support is equally vital, providing essential services such as therapeutic parenting, health considerations for adopted children, and creating an adoption life story. These sessions equip parents with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the complexities of adoption and foster a nurturing environment for their children.
Milestones and achievements
In 2024, the Adoption Service finalised five adoption processes with India and Slovakia, along with seven local adoptions under Chapter 602 of the Minors Protection Act.
These milestones highlight the dedication of professionals who work tirelessly to unite children with loving families. Each completed adoption represents not just a legal process but the beginning of a lifelong bond.
