According to industry insiders, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is officially getting a sequel series, with the American subscription service, Hulu, being close to ordering a pilot.
According to the same sources, the series will be written and executively produced by Nora and Lila Zuckerman, who have worked together on series like Suits. Meanwhile, two-time Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is set to direct and co-produce. Singer and icon Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer of the original series, will also return as an executive producer under a production company she co-owns called Sandollar.
Perhaps the biggest news surrounding the sequel, however, is that Sarah Michelle Gellar, who famously played Buffy in the original series, is in advanced talks to join the project. While she will not be leading the series this time round, she will be a recurring character.
While little else is known about the storyline of the sequel, what’s clear is that it will be set after the events that took place in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and will feature a new slayer… It seems some generations get two chosen ones, after all!
The original series, which aired between March 1997 and May 2001, focused on Buffy Summers who was born with special powers that allow her to kill vampires. Such was the popularity of the show that it inspired a spin-off series, Angel, as well as thousands of collectibles, games, and memorabilia products.
The sequel to Buffy will likely air in late 2026 or early-to-mid 2027.
