Muża, The National Community Art Museum, is implementing significant changes to its permanent exhibitions as part of an initiative to enhance visitor experience. The first-floor gallery has been the focus of recent efforts, with the aim of providing a more comprehensive and immersive exploration of Malta’s artistic heritage.
Heritage Malta has stated that the restructuring follows a chronological narrative, tracing artistic developments from prehistoric times to the present day. The transformation is intended to strengthen Muża’s role as an educational hub, highlighting the contributions of Maltese artists and the influences that have shaped the country’s cultural landscape.
According to Mario Cutajar, Chairperson of Heritage Malta and Director of Muża, the changes are designed to create a more visitor-centric experience. “The first phase has focused on art from the Prehistoric period to the Baroque era, with future developments set to highlight Maltese artists and contemporary art. The redesigned spaces will offer a dynamic and evolving journey through Malta’s artistic history.”
Heritage Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Noel Zammit, said the transformation aligns with modern trends in museology. “Museums and heritage sites are shifting focus from static displays to interactive experiences. We are adopting new interpretation methods to make exhibitions more engaging and accessible, moving away from purely academic presentations. Technology is playing a key role in enhancing visitor engagement.”
